Obituary: Property developer Albert Reichmann, who used real-estate riches to rescue Soviet Jews, has died at age 93

Albert’s mother, Renée Reichmann, led a long-running project to send food parcels and other aid to Jews in refugee and concentration camps. She also contributed to rescue missions that likely saved thousands of Jews from the Holocaust, according to Mr. Bianco.

Albert Reichmann oversaw personnel matters and construction work, Mr. Bianco wrote. When deadlines were missed, he asked for an explanation but didn’t lose his temper. He shunned publicity and once hid behind a column at a reception for a visiting Israeli dignitary to avoid being photographed. In the early 1990s, not long before the fall of their empire, the family’s fortune was estimated at more than $10 billion. Albert was more cautious than Paul, whose stunning success in Toronto, New York and elsewhere may have blinded him to the risks of Canary Wharf. “The fact that I had never been wrong created character flaws that caused me to make mistakes,” Paul Reichmann told Mr. Bianco.
