The Alamo Colleges District, having powered its way out of a pandemic slump that still has many community college systems reeling, plans to ramp up workforce training in the next few years and better engage employers. An ever-changing job market and a shortage of affordable child care and housing remain obstacles to what Alamo Colleges Chancellor Mike Flores calls “an emerging aspirational community” dedicated to winning San Antonio’s fight against poverty.
South Side Alamo Colleges center to host nursing, workforce programs San Antonio has its own problems with affordability, particularly in housing, which some students struggle to find while pursuing a workforce training certificate or associate’s degree. “A lot of our students come in or want to come to get an education but have the obstacle of not having housing,” board member Joe Alderete said. “That really stops them cold at the door.
