Bijan Robinson, along with Roschon Johnson, hasn’t left much room for freshman Jonathon Brooks to get on the field this season. But that will be different in the Alamo Bowl.AUSTIN — With Texas leading Kansas 38-0 in the third quarter back on Nov. 19, the day’s work was done for veteran running backs Bijan Robinson and Roschon Johnson. At that point, it was time to unfasten their chinstraps, relax and watch the next man up get some run in.
Brooks hasn’t had many chances to showcase his skills at Texas. Barring injury, there was just no way to climb past Robinson and Johnson on the depth chart. In the six career games Brooks has touched the ball, he's amassed 322 yards and five touchdowns on 45 carries. While the sample size is small, averaging 7.2 yards per carry is no easy feat at any level.During the regular season the 6-foot, 202-pound Brooks forced seven missed tackles and averaged 5.79 yards after contact, the second-most among Big 12 backs with at least 20 carries.
B. Robinson looks like a future first-round pick after winning this season’s Doak Walker award and earning distinction as a unanimous All-American. Johnson broke tackles at a higher rate than any other player in the nation over the past two seasons, per Pro Football Focus. And K. Robinson is an electric change-of-pace back who’s always one cut away from snapping off a big play.
B. Robinson and Johnson accounted for 2,134 of Texas' 2,395 rushing yards and 23 of its 28 rushing touchdowns this season. That’s a lot of production to replace.
