The average life expectancy in the U.S. dropped nearly two years in 2020.

CDC’s National Center for Health Statistics showed average life expectancy in the U.S. dropped from 78.8 years in 2019 to 77 years in 2020. Eight states – New York, Louisiana, New Jersey, Arizona, Mississippi, New Mexico, Illinois, and Texas – saw average life expectancy declines of more than two years. Alabama was just outside that parameter, with the average life expectancy dropping by 2 years from 75.2 years to 73.2 years. That was the fourth lowest life expectancy in the country.

Overall deaths in the U.S. rose from 19% from 2019 to 2020, the largest jump in a century and attributed mostly to the COVID-19 pandemic.Average life expectancy for men in Alabama was 70.1 years.The difference in life expectancy between the sexes in the U.S. was 5.7 years in 2020, ranging from a high of 7 years in D.C. to a low of 3.9 years in Utah.

Mississippi was the state with the lowest life expectancy . Men there lived an average of 68.6 years; women lived an average of 75. 2 years.
