Alabama’s COVID hospitalizations reached as low as 144 on Nov. 20, says Don Williamson, head of ALhospitals . As of Wednesday, the number had climbed to 300, per ALPublicHealth data. Alabama COVID hospitalizations on the rise again after Thanksgiving:

Alabama topped 300 COVID hospitalizations this week for the first time in months, as the coronavirus and influenza have combined to create a surge of respiratory viral infection in the state.

Williamson said he’s stopped focusing solely on Alabama’s COVID hospitalization numbers, and has started to think of COVID and flu together, as a combined number representing “respiratory viral infection.” He said Alabama hospitals have seen as many as 300 flu patients in a day so far this flu season, and when taken as a whole, there are somewhere between 500 and 600 people in state hospitals with respiratory viruses.

“I worry about what the next several weeks will look like with these two combined respiratory infections,” Williamson said. “This could put us back to a situation where this does create problems for us.”
