Alabama’s Democratic candidate for the District 2 Congressional race will speak this week during the Democratic National Convention.
Shomari Figures will take the stage Thursday night ahead of Vice President Kamala Harris , who is set to accept her party’s nomination for president during the final night of the convention.
“I am honored to be chosen to speak on behalf of Alabama and the voters of District 2,” Figures said in a social media post. “Now is the time to energize our party, educate and organize our communities, and encourage people to vote on November 5th.”Figures, who is facing Republican Caroleen Dobson for the newly-redrawn district, earned more than 60% of the vote when he secured his party’s nomination back in April in a runoff election against Alabama House Minority Leader Anthony Daniels.
Figures served as deputy chief of staff and counselor to U.S. Attorney General Merrick Garland. He is also the son of state Sen. Vivian Davis Figures and the late Senate President Pro Tem Michael Figures, both of whom were prominent in Alabama politics.in south Alabama, from the Georgia to Mississippi lines, with cities including Montgomery, Troy and Greenville. It also includes parts of Mobile County.
The redrawn district, which was safely Republican until it was ordered changed by the courts, has gotten a lot of attention and will likely be hotly contested. Democrats see it as an opportunity to gain a U.S. House seat while Republicans are pushing to keep their slim House majority.
