Reached for comment on Monday, the Akwesasne Mohawk Police Service confirmed it received two calls concerning potential screams coming from the river Wednesday night, but defended its response.
“ stated, ‘Not sure, if I hear someone out on the river, like yelling’ from St-Régis Island,” O’Brien wrote. “She stated several times that she wasn’t sure what she heard because it was very windy.”Article content That caller reported that her cousin’s daughter heard someone screaming for help from what O’Brien described as a local hang-out spot in the village near the water. The person who heard the screams got scared and left, O’Brien said.
