Akron Mayor Shammas Malik proposed a voluntary separation package at Akron Police Department for high-level police officials to Akron City Council Monday night.
Akron Police Department AKRON , Ohio -
A release from the mayor says Monday night said the City Council will just tackle the proposal for the deputy chief position Monday night. Voluntary separation packages for officials at the captain and lieutenants positions will be negotiated with the Akron Police union and proposed at later council meetings in the coming months.Voluntary separation packages, sometimes referred to as buyouts, create openings for officers at lower ranks in the department to advance to higher positions.
The package proposed to council Monday night allowed payment of up to $400,000 for one current deputy chief. This amount was calculated with recognition of the significant pension income that officers forfeit to retire early, and looking at programs in other Ohio communities, including Columbus. While it is a significant figure, Mayor Malik’s administration believes that continuing to prioritize public safety, and creating the strongest leadership structure, giving officers and supervisors more opportunity to advance in their careers and offer new perspectives is a worthwhile expense.
