For all the complaints from Air France and its European peers about unfair competition from Gulf carriers and Norwegian, long-haul performance is relatively solid. The trouble is in short- and medium-haul flying. Airlines need to make step changes, and the A220 promises to enable that.

set to announce an order for 50-70 A220 aircraft, finally giving a strategy to its short-haul network, which has been under serious financial pressure from low-cost airlines, expanded rail offerings and even bus and carpooling services.

The Lufthansa Group was at a similar inflection point when EasyJet challenged the Geneva base of Lufthansa’s Swiss unit. The answer was the then-CSeries, which Airbus renamed the A220 after it took control of the Bombardier-developed airplane. Swiss was unwilling to withdraw from Geneva, and Air France wants to broadly maintain its footprint for local and connecting traffic.

The A220 has restored finances, Hohmeister said. “We are generating some profit out of Geneva, which is good. It has to do also with the machinery we are flying there.” Earlier in July, La Tribune said Air France would about evenly split its order between the A220 and A320neo, without specifying figures. Notably, the A220 is expected to be selected instead of the nearly overlapping A319neo, which has taken a backseat since Airbus acquired the CSeries program from Bombardier and renamed it the A220.
