Peel Regional Police is leading the way in building trust with the communities we serve

. This agreement ensures that necessary remedies are implemented, in an effort to end discrimination in policing, promote transparency and increase the trust that Black, Indigenous and other racialized communities have in policing throughout Peel Region.

Despite the fact that the School Resource Officer program provided value to students, schools and communities, the negative impact it had on others was sufficient enough to warrant a re-evaluation of the program’s overall effectiveness. Peel police did not hesitate to stop the program, and struck a community-based committee to discuss issues related to police interactions with Black and other racialized youth in our region.

Innovation is being welcomed in a variety of ways, but body-worn cameras, in particular, are being used to promote accountability and trust.including recommendationsThere is much more work to be done. We know that the status quo is not working. Eighty per cent of the demand for police services is not criminal in nature and is often related to other personal and societal factors, including mental health.

To change the status quo, all levels of society must come together and we believe we have a golden opportunity to make meaningful changes given the support from the Government of Ontario, our community leaders, who have continued to believe in the potential for change, and our leadership team, which is committed to realizing our stated vision of a “safer community together.”

Maintaining the status quo when it comes to policing is not in anyone’s best interest. In fact, everyone has accepted the challenge of doing things differently and better in order for us to continue the pursuit of providing the best quality policing possible. This is what the residents of the Regional Municipality of Peel expect and deserve. When it comes to the rest of the country, demonstrating that systematic racism can be addressed head-on will only serve to encourage others to do the same.
