Brent, you had a recent article about our A&M run defense that was good. One thing that has been a problem for them for quite some time is technique, and I’m not sure if it’s a philosophy change over the years. It used to be taught for a tackle to square up and be in front of the runner and “wrap them up” … so they have to run through you. … Now, and it’s the same for many other teams, the defensive players do “diving tackles” trying to knock their feet out from under the runner, and that often does not work.
Or they forego the tackle and try and strip the ball – where the runner continues to make more yardage. There was one of those in where four Aggies were on the runner and he made an additional three to four yards. – SF: I believe a big part of the problem with tackling in this era is the lack of ability to do so during practices and in camp in the name of player safety. If you don’t do it in practice it’s hard to do it right in games.
Texas A&M needs to stop spending ridiculous money on over-the-top athletic indulges and “diamond suites” and find some coaches who want to coach, and know how to teach young men the game of football.
