Quinn Ewers has risen to challenge in spring football for Longhorns and appears set to keep the No. 1 job.AUSTIN — For about a month last season, the “what-if” game took hold of Texas and ran wild.
And after Texas fell to 2-2 with an overtime loss at Texas Tech, this notion took hold that the Longhorns would have been 4-0 — and possibly ranked No. 1 in the nation — had Ewers just avoided that injury. Then, over the Longhorns’ last handful of regular-season games, the daily hosannas started to fade. Ewers completed just 50 percent of his passes for 988 yards with five touchdowns and four interceptions during that stretch as coach Steve Sarkisian leaned more on his overpowering backfield.
