Derek Gee, shown in a handout photo, is going through hell and loving it. The 25-year-old from Ottawa, the lone Canadian in the Giro d'Italia, has been a revelation in his first Grand Tour with three second-place finishes and one fourth-place finish in the first two weeks. Now he looks to make his mark in the final week of the race.
"Coming into this race, absolutely not. Not anywhere close," he said during Monday's rest day. "It's been, for sure, an emotional two weeks. But if you'd told me coming in that that's what would happen, I would have been ecstatic. I still am." "He's one hell of a bike rider, he just wants to get out there and race his bike. We've had really bad conditions, some of the worst conditions I've seen in a Grand Tour and it doesn't faze him, he just gets out there and races his bike.""The level of confidence I had going in versus now has definitely changed," he said. "I've learned maybe I don't hate the cold and the rain as much as most. It's been a massive learning curve, for sure.
Gee signed a three-year deal with Premier Tech in May 2022. That came after he turned heads at in the final time trial at Gran Camino that February, clocking the fifth-fastest time against the WorldTour-level field.
