After sitting out two years, Rourke Chartier appreciative of opportunity with Ottawa Senators

Concussions, headaches nearly took away Rourke Chartier's NHL dream. Wednesday, he'll play for the Ottawa Senators vs. Carolina Hurricanes.

For two years, from February of 2019 until February of 2021, Chartier stayed away from contact hockey, focusing on regaining his health.

He told his team’s trainers he wasn’t feeling right, that the headaches wouldn’t go away. So, he was pulled from the lineup. In the first couple of months of 2020, he was feeling better, the headaches had subsided. He began to practise with the Saskatoon Blades junior hockey team — just skating, no contact — to work himself back into game shape.

Chartier was a terrific junior hockey player over four seasons with the Kelowna Rockets. In the 2014-15 season, he showed he has plenty of offensive upside to his game with 48 goals and 34 assists in just 58 games.
