MOUNT PEARL, N.L. — The RNC responded to a call Thursday evening in the Merchant Drive area of Mount Pearl regarding concerns about a youth with a firearm.
Const. James Cadigan, the RNC's public communications officer, said it was reported there was someone potentially carrying a handgun in a parking lot.Cadigan said officers responded and detained two individuals matching the description provided in the report. The detained individuals were found to have a fake firearm, he said.
Cadigan said no arrests were made, but the individuals were informed about the report, and their guardians were also notified. He added that their parents arrived at the scene shortly after being contacted. "It's important to avoid carrying toy firearms or airsoft guns in public spaces, especially in retail areas where they might be mistaken for real firearms. This can lead to heightened suspicion and unnecessary police responses," said Cadigan.
"There is a risk that such items can be mistaken for real firearms, especially in retail spaces where there is already a heightened level of suspicion due to past criminal activity," he added.Back to the hill?
