In the elder Trudeau’s case, this level of public dissatisfaction would prove no barrier to him serving another eight years in office: Pierre Trudeau would not resign for good until March 1984.
That PM is Chrétien, who after eight years in office was still enjoying a level of popularity that Trudeau hasn’t really seen since his first term. But it nevertheless remains extremely rare for Canadian prime ministers to have approval ratings north of 50 per cent, particularly when said prime minister already has a few terms under their belt.
But ever since, those trends have reversed themselves only for rare pinpoints of time, such as a brief period in the spring of 2020 when Trudeau was credited for orchestrating Canada’s COVID mass-vaccination.While Trudeau remains stubbornly popular in the context of his tenure, polls have been showing for months that he may no longer retain the popularity necessary to win an election.
