SAN DIEGO – The object is not to win the winter meetings. But, hey, it couldn’t hurt. Listen, after the last six years around Arlington, winning anything...
thanks to MLB’s first draft lottery. Not a bad haul for a couple of days in San Diego where the sunsets from Chris Young’s 29th floor suite were lovely, but the horizon looks even brighter.
Almost as significant: The Rangers actually now have a pitching pool. It is at least eight men deep. Dane Dunning, Glenn Otto and Cole Ragans, who combined to make 65 starts last year, look at lot better as shorter-term depth options in the event of an injury than as middle-of-the-rotation anchors. It also gives Dunning, returning from hip surgery, plenty of time to continue his recovery.
In the meantime, Heaney gives them a full rotation. The 31-year-old lefty from Oklahoma City was sold, according to a person with knowledge of the talks, in part by Young’s vision, the addition of deGrom and the proximity to his home. Heaney has spent most of the last two seasons with pitching-forward organizations, the New York Yankees and Los Angeles Dodgers.
