Owner says it will be more lucrative to plant blueberries on the land while flying enthusiast says the closing of small, private airstrips will make it difficult for the average worker to afford to…
Pilots who fly their ultralight planes out of a small Surrey airpark were stunned to learn they have two weeks to find another hangar for their planes after its owner announced that he was closing it down.
The King George Airpark has been given an order to vacate the land by April 26, said Roy Kerwood, who rents hangar space for $150 a month. Kerwood said he understands why the landowner would want to plant blueberries, which he said brings in a return of $5,000 an acre. But he said he hoped part of the land could be hived off for a smaller airpark with a shorter runway and fewer hangars, with a different manager.
“Perhaps someone out there that reads the news story will offer a new home for the airpark or fight for the little guys,” he said. “It’s a shame that we are losing these small ,” he said. “It’s very important for training and affordability.”
