After 25 years in Canada, this Toronto man has been spared deportation — and offered path for permanent residence. His next deportation on May 27 was cancelled after the Star published a story about his imminent separation from his son and grandchildren.
Shahed Alam’s heart started racing when he was paged to the office at work for an emergency family call.
Alam’s heart sank and he started sobbing. After a five-minute silence that felt like eternity, Pasnim chuckled and burst out: “Your father is not going to be deported. He’s going to get his permanent residence in Canada. It’s a prank!” The older Alam, now 61, left his family for political asylum from a repressive regime in 1996, and his refugee claim was refused the following year before all appeals were exhausted in 2000.
