Yanaminah Thullah, a conference emcee, says she hopes the conference is just the start of mainstream recognition for Afrofuturism in Canada. "Blackness is historical, present and for the future. I think we often think of Blackness in the context of history or suffering or plight and so other negative imagery," Thullah said."This is just the beginning of learning about Afrofuturism and I hope people can welcome Afrofuturism in more art spaces"For many, Afrofuturism is about building fictional worlds with accurate representation.

Andy Akangah is an illustrator and owner of AKARTS Comics, whose streetwear has caught the eye of celebrities such as Timothée Chalamet and the Weeknd. , Nyeusi-Mawazo Gumbs said it's important to recognize a range of varied cultural experiences — and there's still a ways to go. American Afrofuturism often focuses on characters with different backgrounds or histories than Black Canadians.
