Down 17 points against senior-laden and defending champion Beechcroft, the Africentric boys basketball team stuck to its game plan in the City League championship game Feb. 12 at East.
“There’s definitely a lot of mixed emotions, but getting this opportunity taken from us last year and getting it back this year ... we were down 17 in the third quarter but we came back and got the win,” junior forward Dailyn Swain said. “A lot of teams that are down try to go by themselves, but we stick together. That’s our thing and we got it done.”
Although Bates considered switching to a 1-3-1 zone defense early in the game, he didn’t make the change until the fourth quarter at the urging of assistant coach Neshaun Coleman. Africentric sophomore guard Laron Fuller, who started earlier in the season before moving to a reserve role, scored all seven of his points during the fourth quarter.
