Afghan evacuees in Dallas are starting from scratch, but they don’t have to do it alone | Opinion

Jamileh Jafari serves food to Afghan evacuees at Catholic Charities Dallas on Dec. 22. Break Bread, Break Borders is a nonprofit that worked with Catholic Charities to host a lunch for recent Afghan arrivals in the Dallas area.Human rights activist Roshan Mashal sat down to eat a traditional Afghan meal with her children, their plates heaping with chicken, vegetables, pilaf and flatbread.

Mashal took inventory of her emotions. She felt safe and was grateful for the hospitality. But happy? No. She said she was stressed about fellow Afghans left behind and worried about piecing a new life together. The one that her family had so painstakingly built — including the business and medical careers of her adult daughters — dissolved when the Taliban rolled into Kabul and Mashal turned in her apartment key.

Resettlement agencies often have to find housing on short notice, and evacuees have to wait weeks or months before they have the paperwork to legally take a job in the U.S. The need is great, but so is the generosity of Texans helping new arrivals with resettlement. Airbnb has partnered with resettlement agencies to find temporary homes for Afghan evacuees in Texas and across the U.S. Property owners have opened up their homes for free or at discounted rates, and Airbnb said it had resettled 10,000 Afghans since the summer, mostly in this country.
