Oshawa officials are exploring the feasibility of an aerial gondola along the Simcoe Street corridor as a rapid transit solution. While the concept is still in its early stages, regional staff are conducting studies to assess the potential benefits and costs of the project. The gondola would potentially move up to 2,400 people per hour in each direction, bypassing street traffic and offering a unique alternative to traditional transit options.

Discussions surrounding a potential aerial gondola along Oshawa 's Simcoe Street corridor continue. Officials are currently developing a communication plan and outlining the project's scope before returning to council in the fall. They are exploring various rapid transit options for Simcoe Street . Regional staff currently favor the cable car over alternatives like dedicated bus lanes or light rail transit.

They argue that an elevated cable car would bypass street traffic and potentially transport up to 2,400 people per hour in each direction. According to staff, the construction cost would be approximately $840 million, but it could generate long-term cost savings for the region through fare revenues and the removal of buses from Simcoe Street. 'We're not asking council to endorse implementation,' stated David Dunn, director of transportation and field services. 'We're simply requesting further study. There are still approximately two years of studies remaining on this project, simply to reach a point where we can decide if this is something we would want to implement.' He added that such a project would necessitate funding from higher levels of government or private partnerships. 'It's about being bold and taking significant steps,' argued Whitby Mayor Elizabeth Roy. 'I don't want the media to portray a billion-dollar project as moving forward when it's generating such negativity towards something that could be incredibly positive,' she added. 'The pros and cons truly need to be examined within this project. While we're discussing 14 kilometers and its impact, there could be substantial gains compared to the cost.''I don't believe this is the only area where we'll see changes for transit and transportation across our community as we develop our community and consider what 2031 and 2051 will look like,' she said. 'If we're going to contribute to the Simcoe Street spine, we'll have to see major changes along the corridor and similar corridors east-west,' argued Oshawa Councillor Brian Nicholson. 'It's not just a billion dollars to the federal government; there could be significant costs to Durham Region taxpayers,' he added. 'I think if we're going to be transparent, we need that information as well when we present a communication plan.' 'In my view, it's preferable to allocate limited funds to housing and support for those in need rather than building pipe dreams in the sky,' commented another individual. 'I will not vote for any elected representative, whether federal, provincial, or local, who supports this boondoggle.
