On Monday last week, she went to the Palace of Culture and Science , an enormous Soviet-era building that houses a variety of public institutions and commercial space. Fed knew that the Palace was being used to provide shelter to refugees, but there was a problem.
The two of them realized that they had to organize a better-coordinated volunteer effort, so they created several group chats on Instagram. By the following day, they had ten committed volunteers. The day after that, their project exploded — the local government gave them access to the Palace of Culture to help support incoming refugees. They managed to provide food and shelter to 200 families that night, she said.
Despite the negative connotations surrounding influencers, Fed emphasized that most of them were not performative. She had about ten of them who were consistently working 14 hours a day, and who avoided posting anything to social media which wasn’t directly related to fundraising. Two days earlier, there was a woman who was supposed to board this train. The woman had received her ticket to Berlin, but, paralyzed with stress, simply didn’t board. Volunteers helped her get another ticket for the following night, but, once again, the woman stood in front of the train as it left without her. I started to cry. It felt selfish and unproductive — what right did I have to these tears when they were the ones who were suffering? But Fed put her hand on my forearm. “It’s okay. I was like this for the first three days.” Volunteers at the station had estimated that thousands of refugees were arriving in Warsaw every hour. Over 2 million refugees had already fled Ukraine, with 60 per cent arriving in Poland. Many originated from the eastern regions of the country, where fighting has been concentrated. On their way to Poland, many refugees had passed through Lviv, a Western Ukrainian city that has become a gathering point for those escaping to the border.
