Winning Scarborough-Guildwood, a seat Mitzie Hunter held for about 10 years before she resigned to run for mayor, was expected. If Liberals can’t win that Toronto riding, they might as well pack it in.
Kanata-Carleton has undergone numerous boundary changes, but geographically this mostly farm country on the outskirts of Ottawa has remained a Conservative bastion through its different incarnations. Provincial Conservative stalwarts such Norm Sterling and, federally, Gordon O’Connor have represented this corner of Ottawa for decades. But in McCrimmon, a former Liberal MP for the area, the provincial party found the perfect candidate for the times. The issues seem to match the Liberal narrative.
Despite the victory, the headwinds remain strong against the Liberals. The humiliating losses in the last two elections basically destroyed party morale and more importantly, decimated grassroots organization. The party is in the process of picking a new leader, who will have the unenviable job of rebuilding party infrastructure and constructing a winning message.
