Renting out hospital ORs to orthopedic surgeons on weekends may be an effective way to lessen wait lists. But details are woefully lacking.
True enough, but let’s remember that this group is not performing these surgeries solely for altruistic reasons. You don’t set up a private corporation, buy equipment and hire nurses and other health workers at a premium to do surgeries just out of the goodness of your heart. There is a catch.
Most fundamental is how much the agreement is costing the hospital. Officials say the hospital just doesn’t have the staff to do the surgeries for which it is funded, and so has to turn to a private consortium to fill the gap. Which begs the question: Why is the Ontario government not providing enough funds for hospital staff to utilize unused ORs and perform surgeries on weekends? It doesn’t make sense to call in private cavalry if properly funded hospitals could do the job.
One reason for the surgery backlog is the lack of skilled nurses in ORs. According to reports, The Ottawa Hospital is short some 515 nurses.
