Taking professional-looking videos has (almost) never been easier or more fun than with GoPro’s Hero 12 Black.
I saw it again last weekend. At my neighbourhood cafe for breakfast, the couple next to me took 30 or 40 photos and shot at least one video of themselves, of their food, and of themselvesFrom where I sat, the money shot seemed to be one of the man with his knife and fork poised over the food, just centimetres away from doing what cutlery was actually designed for, but frozen in space while the man looked up at the camera and smiled. The woman made him repeat that pose three or four times.
And I mean that in a good way. Reviewing the GoPro Hero 12 these past two weeks has been a hoot, and made me wish I had one of these things back when I did properly adventurous activities, like white-water kayaking and downhill mountain biking, if only to memorialise the look of terror I’m sure was on my face.
I didn’t have the nerve to point the camera at me, but mounted on the handlebars of a mountain bike was the main way I reviewed the GoPro.One of the big new features on the Hero 12 compared to previous models is its ability to shoot high-dynamic-range video, which improves highlights, shadows and overall contrast. It’s something you’d leave on all the time except for the fact that turning it on disables some seemingly unrelated features.
Huh? What does the aspect ratio have to do with HDR? It’s like the camera’s video-processing pipelines only have so much processing power, and you can only turn so on many features lest the thing overheats and shuts down. From the sound of the breath being forced out of my lungs, from the sound of my bike’s front suspension creaking and from other clues like the way the brake cables move in the video, I can tell when I’ve just ridden through a massive pothole at speed.
Only, it can’t be a dolly because there are no dolly rails visible in the shot, and you’re walking upstairs.
