ACLU of Alabama's Smart Justice Summit highlights perceived issues within Alabama's prison system.
The summit comes during Crime Victims’ Week where many events are held to advocate for the prosecution of crime.MONTGOMERY, Ala. - Participants in ACLU of Alabama ’s Smart Justice Summit wrapped close to a year of hard work in a 30 minute presentation to wrap up their tenure in ACLU ’s Smart Justice Organizing School.
“This is an 8 month program with fellows from across the state, from Gadsden to Montgomery to Huntsville, that are learning how to respond to Alabama’s prison crisis and criminal punishment system,” said ACLU of Alabama spokesperson Jose Vasquez. Projects ranged from art pieces, to podcasts, to book clubs, and focused on how to effectively organize as well as issues like healthcare disparities for incarcerated people.
The summit comes during Crime Victims’ Week where many events are held to advocate for the prosecution of crime. Alabama Attorney General Steve Marshall spoke in Selma on the same day as the summit to honor victims. The ACLU of Alabama believes the state should look towards other solutions before locking people up.
