Up to 60 cm expected before Sunday morning

JOHN'S, N.L. — Closures and cancellations were the order of the day Saturday, Jan. 21, as St. John’s and surrounding areas experienced the first major snowfall of 2023.
Numerous businesses, including liquor stores, grocery stores and restaurants, shut their doors in the morning, opting later to keep them shut with more snow and wind in the forecast for the afternoon.Metrobus announced its vehicles would stay off the road for the remainder of the day.The majority of were due to deteriorating driving conditions as a result of poor visibility and slippery or snow-covered roads.
Police responded to one accident late Friday night in the area of Brier Ave where a vehicle had gone off the road and into a ditch. A 27-year-old female driver was charged with impaired driving. The vehicle was impounded and she was released to appear in Court at a later date.A major storm had been forecast for the region two weeks ago, but only amounted to a few centimetres as the system veered further east than anticipated.
