Academy Museum Opens in L.A. With Glamour and Gaga

The Academy Museum is finally open after 100 years in the making and kicked off with a star-studded gala.

After walking the green carpet, Spike Lee, Ava DuVernay, Cher, Laura Dern, Annette Bening, a caped Ryan Murphy and many more gathered for cocktails on the outdoor terrace facing Wilshire Boulevard.Costume designer Arianne Phillips oversaw the creation of limited-edition products for the gift shop, including “Wizard of Oz”-inspired accessories by Jeremy Scott for Moschino.

Rodarte designers Kate and Laura Mulleavy, filmmakers themselves, dressed Nicole Kidman in a floral beaded column gown straight off their spring 2022 runway. And L.A.-based artists the Haas Brothers created the cool-looking Visionary Award statues, whose inaugural winners were Loren and Ethiopian filmmaker Haile Gerima.

During the program, architect Renzo Piano, who designed the building and space ship-like, orb-shaped theater, got huge applause, as did George Lucas and Mellody Hobson; though they are opening their own Lucas Museum of Narrative Art in downtown L.A., their gift to the Academy Museum ensures free admission to anyone under the age of 17 in perpetuity.
