“Leatherback turtles are on the endangered species list, so it’s especially sad to see one washed up on our shore tangled in the ropes. The size of it really was massive.'

Tessa MacKinnon discovered this dead leatherback sea turtle on May 19 near her in-laws' cottage in the Lower Bedeque area. - ContributedCHARLOTTETOWN, P.E.I. — The Department of Fisheries and Oceans is investigating the recent discovery of a dead leatherback sea turtle that washed up on the beach of Lower Bedeque, P.E.I.

“Leatherback turtles are on the endangered species list, so it’s especially sad to see one washed up on our shore tangled in the ropes. The size of it really was massive. The photo does not do it justice of how giant it was. Fishermen don’t intentionally set traps out thinking a sea turtle is going to get tangled in their ropes, but it does happen. Fishing rope was wrapped around its neck and left fore flipper. It's sad.

“The officers were able to pull the turtle to shore and remove the fishing gear," Bernier said. “Their investigation is ongoing." “When I made the post on Facebook, I had no intention of the post being so controversial," MacKinnon said. “The majority of comments showed compassion and sadness for the giant animal."
