CHARLOTTETOWN, P.E.I. — Abegweit First Nation has broken its own record by donating more than 10,500 pounds of food to the Upper Room Food Bank in Charlottetown.

“We set a goal to beat last year's record. We beat it, we doubled it,” he told SaltWire in an interview Oct. 31. “We’re just very happy with the donation we made.”Mike MacDonald, executive director of the Upper Room Food Bank, said he was amazed to see a dozen truckloads of food arriving at the food bank.

The 12 truckloads of food donations include various non-perishable items like cereals, pastas, rice and canned goods. The food donations are so large it will take quite a while for the food bank staff to sort and place these items on the shelves. - Thinh Nguyen/SaltWire“We're a well-organized community. We're doers. We're not just reacting to situations, we're a proactive community,” said Gould. “Everybody in the community at one point in time needed assistance and stuff like that, and we don't know what the future will hold for us.

Not only in P.E.I. but across the country, more and more people are turning to food banks. According to a recent report from Food Banks Canada, this year witnessed a surge in food bank usage due to the rising cost of living, marking the highest level of need since 1989 when the survey began.
