The New York Jets have decided to move on from quarterback Aaron Rodgers after two seasons. Despite initial excitement and a promising start to his tenure, Rodgers' time with the Jets ultimately fell short of expectations.

Aaron Rodgers ' disappointing two-year stint with the New York Jets has come to an end. The team announced Thursday they informed the 41-year-old quarterback they are moving on without him next season. While Rodgers hasn't publicly stated his intentions for a 21st NFL season, the Jets, under new general manager Darren Mougey and coach Aaron Glenn, have officially ruled out his return to New York.

In a joint statement, Mougey and Glenn said they met with Rodgers last week and conveyed their intention to 'move in a different direction at quarterback.' 'It was important to have this discussion now to provide clarity and enable each of us the proper time to plan for our respective futures,' they stated. 'We want to thank him for the leadership, passion, and dedication he brought to the organization and wish him success moving forward.'Rodgers, a four-time MVP and the fifth player in NFL history to throw 500 touchdown passes in the regular season, has one year left on his contract, worth a non-guaranteed $37.5 million US. New York would absorb a $49 million dead money charge next season unless it designates Rodgers a post-June 1 cut and can spread out that charge over two years. If the Jets opt for the latter, Rodgers would remain on their roster, carrying a $23.5 million salary cap charge, until the start of the NFL's new league year on March 12. Rodgers was traded to the Jets in April 2023 after 18 seasons with the Green Bay Packers, hoping to end the franchise's Super Bowl drought dating back to the 1968 season. At his introductory news conference, he noted how the franchise's only Vince Lombardi Trophy looked 'lonely' in the team's lobby. However, the reality proved to be more of the same for the Jets. Rodgers' first season in New York ended just four snaps into his debut due to a torn left Achilles tendon, derailing the Jets' Super Bowl aspirations. While he battled back to start every game this past season, inconsistencies plagued both him and the offense, resulting in a 5-12 finish. Rodgers' Jets tenure concluded with six wins, including the injury-shortened game, in 18 starts.'I personally want to thank Aaron for his time at the New York Jets,' owner Woody Johnson stated. 'His arrival in 2023 was met with unbridled excitement and I will forever be grateful that he chose to join us to continue his Hall of Fame career. From Day 1, he embodied all that it meant to be a New York Jet, embraced our fans and immersed himself in our city. That is what I will remember most when I look back at his time here.'Rodgers threw for 3,897 yards and 28 touchdown passes this season, both ranking third for a single season in franchise history. However, he experienced mobility issues early in his return and subsequently encountered additional leg injuries, including a significant hamstring ailment. The Jets' offense struggled to produce, the defense faltered, leading to the dismissals of general manager Joe Douglas and coach Robert Saleh mid-season. In what proved to be his final New York appearance, Rodgers threw a season-high four touchdown passes in a win over Miami on January 5. It was a vintage performance, a bittersweet reminder to fans of the potential that existed for Rodgers and the Jets.Last offseason, Rodgers made headlines when he skipped mandatory minicamp for the Jets and instead embarked on a trip to Egypt planned during his recovery from injury. He was also mentioned by Robert Kennedy Jr. as a potential vice presidential candidate during Kennedy's presidential campaign. However, Rodgers maintained his focus on football and completing a successful comeback season, which included the Jets trading for close friend and former Packers teammate Davante Adams. Now, the franchise will seek a new quarterback while Rodgers contemplates his next move. He expressed his desire for a mental break before making a decision on his playing future. Fox Sports reported last Sunday that Rodgers met with the Jets in New Jersey and was informed of the team's plans
