On the anniversary of the late queen’s death, Vanity Fair’s royal correspondent and DYNASTY cohost looks back on a day that changed the world forever.

Traditions run deep in the royal family and during the first year of his reign, Charles has been keen to keep many of them alive. In doing so, he has retained much of the warmth and goodwill the public showed his mother, and there is a sense of continuity and familiarity in the UK amidst much political and economic turmoil.

The king was at Royal Ascot just weeks after his coronation, and in Scotland for Holyrood Week. In December, the family gathered to celebrate Christmas at Sandringham, following the queen’s familiar itinerary almost to the letter. All senior members of the family were invited including, controversially, Prince Andrew.and although he has made some changes at the castle like putting the late queen’s equestrian-themed paintings in store, little else has changed.

Given the queen’s record-breaking reign it was, at times, hard to imagine that Britain and the Commonwealth would embrace Charles as the new king. When I interviewed constitutional historians about the transition forsome warned that it would be both a pivotal and potentially dangerous moment for the House of Windsor. Would apathy be the end of Charles’s reign? Would republicanism take root?

I believe King Charles’s success so far is largely down to the fact that he has not rocked the boat as many feared he might. He has not significantly meddled in politics or lobbied ministers. He has stuck to the core beliefs and values that shaped his 64-year tenure as Prince of Wales. Sustainability, climate change, and supporting young people all remain high on his agenda, and they are popular issues with the younger generation whose support Charles must secure if the monarchy is to continue.

Charles has managed to sidestep excessive scrutiny over royal spending by purporting he will be tightening the royal purse strings. There has been a shuffling—and firing—of royal aides as the household has changed as well as a shake-up of royal residences.
