The Irish bar in Washington Heights announced on April 20 that it will shut its doors for good.
Coogan’s, an Irish bar in New York City’s Washington Heights neighborhood beloved by the track and field community, announced on April 20 that it will be shuttering its doors for good because of the coronavirus pandemic.Peter Walsh, one of the co-owners, wasn’t always into track and field, but he embraced the role the bar plays in the fabric of the sport—a celebration and watering spot for runners of all levels.
Coogan’s was on the brink of closing a little more than two years ago, when a rent hike was too much for it to sustain. But after significant community support, and a petition signed by 15,000 people in a few hours, New York-Presbyterian Hospital—which owns the building where Coogan’s is housed—struck the bar a deal. Much of the running paraphernalia will be donated to The Armory, where it can be viewed by the public.
