A timeline of Quanell X’s rise, from venerated activist to a man accused of taking money from vulnerable people
For decades, Quanell X served as Houston’s voice for the downtrodden and disenfranchised. In that time, the activist cultivated a reputation that many consider well-earned. He fought for those who suffered police violence, unfair evictions and racial discrimination in the workplace.
Quanell X stands at an intersection in the South Acres street where he grew up, Oct. 25, 2016, in Houston. Quanell spent time dealing drugs in the area, especially at the intersection three doors down from his grandmother's house.Quanell turns to drugs and running with gangs. He is convicted of cocaine possession and sent to Harris County Jail. He ultimately pleaded guilty to selling cocaine and received 10 years' probation.
Quanell X sits in a courtroom in the Harris County Criminal Justice Center Monday prior to jury selection in his trial for evading arrest in 2004.A “tribunal” is held at the Shape Community Center in Houston to debate allegations that Quanell has been charging families for services, Vincent and others said, and has not delivered on promises kept to members of the African-American community. A group of influential leaders decides to distance themselves from Quanell, Dickson and others say.
At the time, Ben Yah said he knew people had accused Quanell of misleading them, and he wanted to confront Quanell about the allegations but he did not do so at the time. Dickson and Ben Yah instruct her to reach out to Quanell and ask for the money back. The two men also talk to Quanell about paying her back.
