and “The French Dispatch.” This year, the big films are Brendan Fraser’s comeback film “The Whale,” the adaptation of Don DeLillo’s “White Noise” starring Adam Driver, “The Good Nurse” starring Jessica Chastain, and the opening night blockbuster, “Glass Onion: A Knives Out Mystery.”
The festivities kicked off at the Smith Rafael Film Center, with a line snaking around the outside of the three-screen art deco movie house. Given the location, the fest has a reputation for older crowds, and there was indeed more gray hair than I’ve ever seen in a theater, mixed with a few young movie fans hoping to score a rush ticket. Good news for badgeless fans looking to see future screenings: Everyone in line got in.
Rather than revisiting the characters from the original, “Glass Onion” sends superstar detective Benoit Blanc on a new mission. It takes place during the height of the coronavirus pandemic and might just be the first blockbuster to acknowledge the change in American life. Blanc is wallowing in boredom, literally laying around in his bathtub waiting for a new assignment when a mysterious puzzle box arrives on his doorstep.
