New A’s manager Mark Kotsay is focused on preparing his team for accelerated spring training, even with roster uncertainty.
It took almost three full months, but for the first time as A’s manager, Mark Kotsay finally spoke to his players when the lockout lifted on Thursday.
But that excitement will almost surely be tempered by one of the most unusual spring training periods imaginable, as several frontline A’s players could be traded in the run-up to Opening Day. Most notable of the players in the rumor mill is star first baseman Matt Olson, who Kotsay said was his first call once he was allowed to contact players.
When asked if any players expressed concern over the trade talks, Kotsay acknowledged that the “distractions” do exist, but he felt players were more focused on just getting out on the field. “Well, if you’re asking me if I want to contend for a playoff spot, absolutely, I do want to contend for a playoff spot,” Kotsay said. “That’s why we put the uniform on. We play to win.”Kotsay said about 11 players — though he could be off by one or two — attended Friday’s optional workout at their Mesa facility, and four pitchers threw bullpens.
