“I don’t know if it’s a large presence of Oakland fans here or if fans across the league share the sentiment, but I did notice that,” Rooker said.
Outside the stadium, groups of fans protested similarly. There were attempts to organize a silent protest at the start of the fifth inning, similar to the one at the Coliseum earlier this season, but the most noticeable sign of dissent came in the first of Rooker’s two at-bats.
“Continuously throughout the year no matter which side of the aisle you stand on, Oakland fans have made it very clear how passionate they are about their team and their city,” he said. “I think that in and of itself, in a vacuum, is pretty special. I think anybody who shows that kind of passion for something, there’s something to be said about that.
Rooker, who was claimed off waivers last November, garnered attention Monday when he said he had a request for baseball’s biggest star: He wanted Shohei Ohtani to autograph a picture of him homering against him.
