Parks Canada is closing two roadways in Jasper National Park in response to an incoming storm that could create dangerous avalanche conditions.

The federal agency announced Sunday that sections of the Icefields Parkway and Maligne Lake Road will be closed Monday in response to increased avalanche risk brought on by an expected winter storm.Sign up to receive daily headline news from the Calgary Herald, a division of Postmedia Network Inc.By clicking on the sign up button you consent to receive the above newsletter from Postmedia Network Inc.

“Parks Canada only closes roads when absolutely necessary, when weather, road or avalanche conditions present a risk to human life,” the agency said in a news release. “When roads are closed, gates are locked for the safety of park visitors and motorists. Breaking gates or intruding into avalanche control areas is unsafe and illegal.”

Icefields Parkway, a scenic route running near the continental divide, will be closed from Parker Ridge to Saskatchewan River Crossing starting at 11 a.m. Monday. Maligne Lake Road, meanwhile, will be barred from 8 a.m. Monday until conditions improve. The road will be blocked from Maligne Hostel to Maligne Lake, though day-use areas at Maligne Canyon and Maligne Hostel will remain accessible.

Avalanche control work will begin once the storm has passed. Visitors are asked to monitor 511.Alberta.ca for updates.
