With support among Albertans hanging around 22 per cent, Kenney’s popularity is a topic of deep concern among party loyalists, but so too is the topic of party…

At the tables, littered with coffee cups and waters and Coke cans, listeners clapped and offered up some hearty “hear hears.” One woman, knitting a blue, white and purple project, set her needles down to applaud.

The audience applauds Alberta Premier Jason Kenney during his keynote speech at the United Conservative Party annual general meeting in Calgary on Saturday, on Nov. 20, 2021.Gavin Young/Postmedia “I know that many of you are angry with me, and our government for introducing public-health restrictions at various times throughout COVID,” said Kenney, offering a sobering defence of his actions. “I was days away from having to authorize critical-care triage protocols. Bluntly, that means pulling life support from some people and denying life-saving care for others.”Eventually he turned to trumpeting the renewed strength the provincial economy, as many predicted he would.

“People are moving to Alberta once again to benefit from our renewal of the Alberta Advantage,” said Kenney. “Hope really is here for our future … Alberta is back, Alberta is rising, Alberta is on a roll.” Kenney’s future isn’t the only matter weighing on people’s minds at the convention. With their party’s deep unpopularity, there is the fear that the UCP, built on a merger of two mainly urban and rural conservative parties, could split apart again. Or worse, could lose to the NDP in 2023.Article content
