A haze is slowly settling over Toronto as smoke from the Quebec wildfires drifts southward, and Environment Canada is warning people that they could feel its impact over the next few days.
“Our modelling shows that this may be an especially severe wildfire season throughout the summer,” Prime Minister Justin Trudeau said in Ottawa on Monday.
Bill Blair, the federal minister for emergency preparedness, echoed the warning, saying the images and reports of wildfire activity across the country are some of the most severe ever witnessed.Environment Canada issued a special air quality statement in Toronto on Monday as smoky skies from Quebec’s forest fires reduced visibility in the city.Northerly winds are pushing smoke plumes from Quebec’s wildfires southward, causing poor air quality.
The air quality statement says anyone who feels unwell or experiences breathing problems should stop or reduce their activity level.Wearing an N95 or equivalent mask can also help block smoke particles. “These fine particles generally pose the greatest risk to health. However, respirators do not reduce exposure to the gases in wildfire smoke,” the air quality statement reads.Torontonians took to social media to share pictures of the “strawberry” red moon seen in the sky last night.
Environment Canada warning preparedness meteorologist Gerald Cheng said the moon’s reddish colour is related to the wildfire smoke,Cheng said that when we typically see a red sun during a sunrise, for example, we’re observing it through a thicker atmosphere. “There’s more particulate matter between our eyes … right now we don’t need to wait for the sunrise or sunset because of the increase of particles in the atmosphere due to the smoke,” he said.Multiple provinces including Alberta and Nova Scotia are battling fires
