CHICAGO — Kamala Harris promised to be a president for all Americans as she closed out the Democratic National Convention where a former United States ambassador to Canada sounded the alarm that a second Donald Trump presidency would cause chaos for
Canadians.
"If Donald Trump is elected president, Canada is at great risk," he said, pointing to Trump's stand on trade, abortion and clawing back environmental policies. He said there are at least 6.5 million eligible voters living in other countries, mainly in Canada and Mexico. Heyman, who was appointed under Obama, became well-known for strengthening the relationship between Canada and the U.S. under both former prime minister Stephen Harper and Prime Minister Justin Trudeau.
Thousands of people in the U.S. who were afraid of rumours of mass deportations started travelling into Canada outside of regular border crossings. He added that Canada would likely have to fast-track its NATO defence funding commitments to avoid Trump's wrath. Trudeau said last month that Canada expects to hit its target of spending two per cent of national gross domestic product on defence by 2032.
