A plastic skull with a battery inside triggered a security alert at Salt Lake City International Airport. SALT LAKE CITY, Utah — Make no bones about it, this is a strange way to cause a security concern at an airport.

The Transportation Security Administration says baggage screening at Salt Lake City International Airport was suspended recently for nearly two hours because of a potential security threat. The shutdown occurred at about 8 a.m. on Sept. 18, from the TSA. The agency says an explosive detection unit flagged an item inside a piece of checked luggage that looked like a homemade explosive device. It turns out the skull, which included a 9-volt battery and a sensor, is a medical training device for spine and neurosurgeons, the TSA says. It’s used to teach neurosurgeons on how to conduct a lobotomy. It belonged to a passenger taking it to Cancun, Mexico, to put on display at a trade show.

Although it wasn’t an explosive, the skull still wasn’t allowed on a commercial aircraft, the TSA says, and was retained by security agents. If you purchase a product or register for an account through a link on our site, we may receive compensation.
