Carol Anne says seniors college courses are a positive alternative for people to turn to after the glow of retirement wears off.

Smith always loved classical music but never properly understood the music and its history. Attending classes put on by the late Bill Bartlett in Charlottetown “opened a whole new chapter of my life. Opera was another subject that I never had chance to explore.”“I am a strong believer in lifelong learning,” says Smith, whose working career saw him involved in the not-for-profit field, in particular the Multiple Sclerosis Society and United Way.

“And that’s where seniors college came along. It was a great answer. I think people want to fill the rest of their life with things that they enjoy doing. I feel bad for seniors who are sitting at home and bored.” The age eligibility for the college is 50 and up, so Leah Bergstreiser, a self-described"come from away" from Ontario, is on the opposite end of the age spectrum to Smith. She is nonetheless just as enthusiastic about the college offerings.
