Turkey marks the third anniversary of 2016 coup attempt with tributes to those who sacrificed their lives to save democratic rule

As news of the attempted coup spread, citizens left their homes and offices to stop the soldiers armed with guns and tanks. Ahmet Hasbal's sons Cengiz and Huseyin, were at the forefront of a group of democracy supporters headed to Istanbul’s Bogazici Bridge – since renamed the July 15 Martyrs’ Bridge – which had been barricaded by putschist forces.
Civan, currently living in Gumushane in Turkey’s Black Sea region, was in Tuzla in the metropolis of Istanbul the night of the defeated coup when he was shot by rogue soldiers. On the loss of his son, Baysan added: “No matter how much the pain is suppressed, it doesn’t disappear. Every day and hour, my son is before my eyes, but we have to accept the situation.”
