Ottawa—The nearly $93 billion in agrifood exports in 2022 shows a great economic opportunity for the country that could be made better with a national agriculture research strategy.
Among the issues for a research strategy are creating scientific and technological advancements in agriculture and food production. Areas to work on range from “crops, livestock, aquaculture, and other agricultural products to the technologies and practices related to their production, processing and distribution,” he said.
Among the current challenges are finding ways to keep up with population growth and food demand, changing consumer expectations, geo-political disturbances, climate change and environmental concerns, productivity, food safety and security. Among the challenges facing current research and innovation work are funding and resource allocation, limited funding, competition for resources and a short-term focus, Buy said.
