Majorities in both parties support extreme-risk protection orders.

A considerable chunk of Americans — including majorities of Republicans and gun owners — supports so-called red-flag laws, a new survey shows.

The survey, jointly conducted by American Public Media’s APM Research Lab, the public-radio reporting collaboration Guns & America and the American Public Media mental-health initiative Call to Mind, was administered July 16-21 — prior to the Gilroy, El Paso and Dayton shootings, which occurred within a seven-day span.

Women showed stronger support for ERPOs than men did, the survey found, particularly for those initiated by family . People with a college or graduate degree also expressed greater support for ERPOs than those with a high-school diploma or less, particularly for those that were police-initiated . Researchers conducted a preliminary analysis of the impacts of California’s ERPO statute, under which ERPOs are called gun-violence restraining orders, or GVROs, implemented in January 2016. They detailed 21 cases in which a GVRO was issued after a person “had made a clear declaration of intent to commit a mass shooting” or exhibited behavior suggesting as much, and had or would soon gain access to firearms.
