“Without CO2, we’d lose significant shelf life on our products,” Kraft said in a company memo to retailers. Ethanol plants were impacted by the Texas freeze in February 2021, which shut down most of the major petrochemical facilities on the coast of Louisiana. This led to significant damage to much of the equipment, which then required companies to shut down production. It all led to shortages of resins as well as ethanol around the country. Unfortunately, the industry was never really able to catch up with demand since.
The whole situation, however, has been a wakeup call for the food and beverage industry. What alternative sources for CO2 exist now? And what ingredients can serve as substitutes for CO2 should something similar happen again?Production of CO2 is also impacted by routine maintenance shutdowns at other industrial facilities that produce carbon dioxide. These shutdowns, known as “turnarounds,” often last several weeks.
