From heartbreak to euphoria: Inside Virginia’s emotional national title celebration
CLOSE Virginia stars Ty Jerome, Kyle Guy and De'Andre Hunter do their best to put their excitement into words after being crowned national champions. USA TODAY Sports
Last year, the police escort following the Cavaliers’ historic loss to Maryland Baltimore County — the first time a No. 1 seed lost to a No. 16 — came as a result of death threats and criticism of Virginia players. Then there was Ty Jerome’s embrace with his parents, Mark Jerome and Melanie Walker, as confetti spread all over the court.
— USA TODAY Sports April 9, 2019Mark Jerome recalled memories as he watched his son cut down his portion of the net. It was Jerome’s assist to De’Andre Hunter with 12 seconds left in regulation that sent the game to overtime in the most pivotal play of the title game. "When other teams started making at us, we kept having faith the whole time, says Diakite, who shared his championship moment with family members over the phone in his native Guinea. "I was on the stage after the game like, ‘Wow, we’re champions?’ Then you think about how focused we were for every game, how hard we worked, and then you’re like, ‘Oh yeah, we’re supposed to win.’ … UMBC was actually good for us. It was a learning lesson. Now we’re champions. Lesson learned.
Associate coach Jason Williford says UVA’s methodical offense and pack-line defense have, for too long, gotten a bad rap.
